''Sportbrüder'' merged briefly with ''VfB Leipzig'' in 1898 to form ''VfB Sportbrüder 1893 Leipzig'' in a union that lasted until 2 May 1900 when the two clubs separated again. Little else is known about the football team beyond their participation in the Verband Leipziger Ballspiel Vereine (Federation of Leipzig Ballgame Teams) in 1899 and 1900. The athletic department of ''Sportbrüder'' organized the country's first marathon on 5 September 1897.
